Sthala Purāṇa tradition · sacred narrative

Per the Koṭirudra Saṃhitā, the demon Bhīma, son of Kumbhakarṇa, tormented the worlds from Kāmarūpa and tried to force the captive king Sudakṣiṇa to abandon his worship of Śiva; when the demon struck at the king's liṅga, Śiva burst forth and destroyed him. The saṃhitā's listing places Bhīmaśaṅkara in the Ḍākinī country, which this temple's tradition identifies with the Sahyādri hills.
