Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameswaram

Rāmanāthasvāmī Kōvil, Rāmeśvaram
रामनाथस्वामी मंदिर, रामेश्वरम · அருள்மிகு இராமநாதசுவாமி கோயில்
Rameswaram (Pamban Island), Tamil Nadu · Śaiva (a rare kṣetra equally central to Vaiṣṇava pilgrimage through the Rāma tradition) · every claim sourced

Overview

Rāmanāthasvāmī at Rāmeśvaram is both one of the twelve Jyotirliṅgas and the southern dhāma of the Chār Dhām, the only kṣetra that anchors both circuits. Setubandha–Rāmeśvara is named in the Dvādaśa Jyotirliṅga Stotram, and the temple's sanctity rests on the Rāma tradition: the Lord of this liṅga is Rāma's own Nātha. The Tamil Nadu HR&CE Department administers the temple.

Sthala Purāṇa tradition · sacred narrative

Per the Setu Māhātmya of the Skanda Purāṇa's Brahma Khaṇḍa, Śrī Rāma, together with Sītā, established and worshipped the liṅga at Setubandha — seeking Śiva's grace after the war in Laṅkā — and the tīrthas of the island bestow purification on pilgrims who bathe in them before darśana.
