Overview

Badrinath, high in the Garhwal Himalaya on the Alakanandā, is the northern dhāma of the Chār Dhām and one of the great Viṣṇu kṣetras of Bharat. The Shri Badarinath Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), constituted under the 1939 Act, administers the shrine. The temple opens only for a summer season each year and closes for winter.

Badarikāśrama is the hermitage of the twin sages Nara and Nārāyaṇa, whose austerities there are told in the Mahābhārata; the Badarikāśrama Māhātmya of the Skanda Purāṇa exalts the kṣetra where Nārāyaṇa abides beneath the badarī (jujube) tree — from which the dhāma takes its name.
