Overview

The Dwarkadhish temple — the Jagat Mandir — enshrines Śrī Kṛṣṇa as Lord of Dvārakā, the western dhāma of the Chār Dhām and one of the Sapta Mokṣapurīs. The temple is a registered public trust with the Government of Gujarat as sole trustee, managed day-to-day by a government-appointed Devasthan Samiti.

Sthala Purāṇa tradition · sacred narrative

The Bhāgavata Purāṇa tells of Śrī Kṛṣṇa establishing his capital at Dvārakā after leaving Mathurā and ruling there through the Mahābhārata age. After his departure from the world, the sea rose and took the city, all but the sacred precinct of the Lord. The Sapta Mokṣapurī śloka preserves Dvārakā's place among the seven liberation-bestowing cities.
