Shree Jagannatha Temple, Puri
Overview
The Shree Jagannatha temple at Purī, the Śrīmandir, is the eastern dhāma of the Chār Dhām, enshrining the wooden triad of Jagannātha, Balabhadra and Subhadrā at Puruṣottama Kṣetra. Its administration vests, under the Shree Jagannatha Temple Act of 1954, in the Shree Jagannatha Temple Managing Committee, with the Raja of Puri as chairman. The temple's daily worship is an elaborate sequence of nitis that runs from before dawn to midnight.
Sthala Purāṇa tradition · sacred narrative
The Puruṣottama Kṣetra Māhātmya of the Skanda Purāṇa tells of King Indradyumna's quest for the Lord: the hidden image of Nīla Mādhava, the divine direction to fashion deities from sacred wood (dāru), and the Lord's abiding presence at Purī as Puruṣottama — Jagannātha, Lord of the Universe.
