Per the Koṭirudra Saṃhitā, the demon Dāruka and his forest-dwelling host tormented the region until the imprisoned Śiva-devotee Supriya called on the Lord; Śiva rose from the earth, destroyed the oppressors, and remained in the Dārukāvana as Nāgeśvara, with the Goddess as Nāgeśvarī.
