Sthala Purāṇa tradition · sacred narrative

Per the Koṭirudra Saṃhitā, the sage Gautama, seeking expiation for the unintended killing of a cow, worshipped Śiva at Brahmagiri and prayed for the Gaṅgā to descend and purify the land. Śiva remained as Tryambakeśvara, and the Gaṅgā descended as the Godāvarī — the Gautamī.

Where traditions differ, MandirPal shows each view with its sources and declares none of them absolute. Sacred narrative is labelled as tradition, history as documented evidence. Timings and rules change, so confirm with the official temple channel before you travel.
