Sthala Purāṇa tradition
Per the Koṭirudra Saṃhitā, when the sage Gautama sought expiation and prayed for the Gaṅgā to purify the southern land, Śiva granted the prayer at Brahmagiri: the Gaṅgā descended as the Godāvarī, and the Lord remained there as Tryambakeśvara.
